Does my child need to wear a face covering at school? Will members of staff wear PPE?
According to the most recent guidance, primary pupils do not need to wear face coverings in the school building. However, any child who wishes to wear a face covering is to be allowed to do so.
As adults are to maintain a 2 metre distance from pupils, face coverings should be worn by staff in the event that they are not able to maintain this distance or if they are working face-to-face with pupils for more than 15 minutes i.e. for staff working with pupils with additional support needs who require close contact.
Additional staffing areas will be set up so that staff can maintain a 2 metre distance between each other during break and lunchtimes. Staff must wear face coverings when moving around the building.
PPE will only be used by staff in the following circumstances:
- where a member of staff is supporting a child with personal care or first aid then disposable gloves and an apron are required. However, if there is a risk of contamination with splashes/droplets of blood/body fluids then a mask and a visor/goggles are also required
- where a child or member of staff is suspected of having the virus. In this case, the affected person is to remain in the First Aid area with a member staff who will be expected to wear disposable gloves, an apron, a mask and a visor/goggles.
